Akyamfoɔ Asafo Boakye Agyemang-Bonsu, Chief of Kumasi Asafo and Head of the Akwamu Divisional Council, has been appointed as the new Chairman of the Governing Council of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi. His appointment marks the continuation of a career dedicated to public service, sustainable development, and the preservation of cultural heritage.
The Governing Council is the highest decision-making body of the university, and its Chairman plays a crucial leadership role. The key duties include:
- Presiding Over Council Meetings – The Chairman leads all Governing Council sessions, ensuring proper deliberation and decision-making on university policies.
- Strategic Governance – Oversees the implementation of the university’s strategic plans and ensures alignment with national educational goals.
- Policy Formulation & Oversight – Approves major policies, including financial management, academic regulations, and administrative reforms.
- Appointments & Promotions – The Council, under the Chairman’s guidance, approves the appointment of key officers, such as the Vice-Chancellor, Pro Vice-Chancellors, and Registrar.
- Financial Stewardship – Ensures prudent financial management, including budget approvals and resource mobilization.
- Stakeholder Engagement – Represents KNUST in high-level engagements with government, industry partners, and international institutions.
- Conflict Resolution & Compliance – Ensures the university operates within legal and regulatory frameworks, mediating disputes when necessary.
The Governing Council also includes representatives from government, academia, industry, and alumni. The Chairman works closely with the Vice-Chancellor (currently Prof. Rita Akosua Dickson) to ensure smooth university administration.
